PETERSBURG – Mary Elizabeth Betty Foster of Petersburg, formerly of Chatham, IL died at 9:10 am, Wednesday, October 13, 2010 at Sunny Acres Nursing Home. She was born September 1, 1918 in Alexandria, VA to Fred and Phyllis Edgell. When WWII ended, her parents returned to Lincoln, IL, where she was raised. She married Robert K. Foster on October 14, 1940 and he preceded her in death on February 18, 1979.
Betty is survived by 5 daughters Martha (Douglas) Sutton of Springfield, Nancy (James) McBane of Houston, TX, Mary Elizabeth Liddy (Joseph) McLaughlin of Houston, TX, Phyllis (Aubra) Shropshire of Visalia, CA and Virginia Calfee of Baton Rouge, LA; 2 sons Robert K. (Carolyn) Foster of San Carlos, CA and Samuel (Judy) Foster of Petersburg, 13 grandchildren, and 17 great-grandchildren.
Mary was a resident of Petersburg for 8 years and formerly lived in Chatham. She was a licensed Realtor/Broker. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Church in Chatham and DAR. She earned a Bachelor of Arts at St. Mary’s College, Notre Dame, IN. In her 70’s she began a course of study at Sangamon State University (now the University of Illinois Springfield) culminating in a Master’s Degree. In later years, she was an avid reader and email correspondent.
Memorial Gathering: 4-6 pm, Sunday, October 17, 2010 at Staab Funeral Home
Memorial Mass: 10 am Monday, October 18, 2010 at St. Joseph’s Church in Chatham with Fr. John H. Nolan officiating.
Burial will be in Chatham Memorial Cemetery
Memorials may be given to St. Joseph’s Church, Chatham, IL.
