Mary E. Fleckenstein, 90, of Springfield, IL, passed away at Memorial Medical Center on Tuesday, May 2, 2017. She was born May 16, 1926 in Witt, IL, to Claude Anthony and Margaret Louise Cullumber Munster. She married her childhood sweetheart Leonard “Len” Fleckenstein on June 1, 1946.
Mrs. Fleckenstein was employed by the Illiopolis Munitions Plant during WWII, and Illinois Bell before starting her family. As a loving wife, mother and grandmother, Mary devoted her life to her family, friends, and pets. She was a lifelong member of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, and the Humane Society.
She is survived by her children, Thomas Fleckenstein, Rebecca Meeks, Timothy (Teri) Fleckenstein and Jennifer Banning (Linda Sherwood), all of Springfield; grandchildren, Nathan and Jacob Meeks of Springfield, Greg (Hanna) Fleckenstein of Noblesville, IN and Ryan (Bryn) Fleckenstein of Maplewood, MO; four great grandchildren, Tanner, Keegan and Peyton Meeks all of Springfield and Heidi Fleckenstein of Noblesville, IN; one sister, Kate Green of Largo, FL, several nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, and all others that she considered her loved ones.
She is preceded in death by her husband, and sister, Anita Hunt of Decatur.
Visitation: 10:30 – 11:30 am, Tuesday, May 9, 2017 at Staab Funeral Home – Springfield.
Funeral Service: 11:30 am, Tuesday, May 9, 2017 at Staab Funeral Home with Rev. Jeff Grant officiating. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery.
The family requests memorial contributions be made to the Animal Protective League or Blessed Sacrament Church or School.
