Mary Belle Spikre, age 102, a life-long resident of Springfield, Illinois, died September 26, 2012 at Oak Terrace Healthcare in Springfield, Illinois. Throughout her life, she earnestly heralded Springfield as the most beautiful city anywhere. She was very thankful to have spent her life here.
She was known for owning The Spikre Shoppe on Monroe Street for many years. This was a business her Mother-in-law, Minnie Spikre had started in the 1930s. Previously she had worked for Illinois Bell Telephone. After selling the Spikre Shoppe, she worked until age 76 at Myers Brothers/later Bergner’s.
Mary Belle was member of Grace Lutheran Church, Lalla Rourke Chapter of Eastern Star. Since 2002 she chose to live at Oak Terrace Healthcare on West Washington St.
After 65 years of marriage, Mary Belle was predeceased October 2000 by her beloved husband Floyd F. Spikre, fondly known as “Spike”.
Mary Belle is survived by their daughter Judy and son-in-law Jim, as well as grandchildren Wendy, Jim, and Matthew. She has seven great-grandchildren.
Mary Belle loved and valued many friends and family members. Her philosophy was that “it’s important to value family, but it’s also important to invest in friendships.” Consequently she will be missed by many. She was known as a “positive, gracious lady”! Thanksfulness and appreciation were imbedded on her brow. “Can’t complain about a thing” was her frequently used motto.
Arrangements for the funeral are being handled by Staab Funeral Home. Burial will be at Oak Ridge Cemetery Mausoleum.
Visitation will be Saturday, October 6th from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 pm with the Funeral following with Pastor Jim Semradek III officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Mary Belle’s name to
Grace Lutheran Church, 714 E. Capitol Ave., Springfield, IL 62701 and/or her grandson Jim’s Waterfront Community Church, P.O. Box 68036, Schaumburg, IL 60168.
