SHERMAN – Mary Alice Jerome, 95, of Sherman, Illinois, was born into eternal life at 10:10 p.m. on Friday, January 22, 2010, at Villa Health Care East of Sherman.
She was born Friday, July 31, 1914, in Springfield, Illinois, the daughter of William and Ethel May Rath. She married Richard Richie Jerome on Sunday, March 11, 1934; he preceded her in death on Monday, February 27, 1989.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, William, Roy and Robert; one sister, Elma; and two infant sisters.
Mary had lived in Sherman since 1934, where she was a devoted wife, mother and a terrific grandmother who enjoyed spending time with all of her grandchildren. Mary was always prepared to serve her famous chili and hot dogs to her family and friends. She was a member of St. John Vianney Catholic Church and a past member of the St. John Vianney Ladies Society.
Mary worked at Allis-Chalmers shipping department during the Second World War and co-owned and operated Richie and Mary’s Tavern in Sherman from 1948 to 1980.
She is survived by her son, James (wife, Peggy) Williamson of Sherman; three grandchildren, Samuel (wife, Wendy) Williamson of Williamsville, Edward J. Williamson of Sherman and Stephanie Williamson of Murphysboro; also surviving are several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Mary’s family greatly appreciates the loving care and dedication she received from the entire staff of Villa Health Care East of Sherman over the past seven years.
Friends may visit the family at Staab Funeral Home in Springfield on Monday, January 25, 2010, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be at St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Sherman on Tuesday, January 26, 2010. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. with Rev. Monsignor Carl A. Kemme officiating. Burial will follow in Camp Butler National Cemetery.
