Marta Cawsey, 81, of Auburn, Illinois, passed away quietly in her sleep on Tuesday, August 16, 2011 at her new home in Eastland Retirement Community.
She was born October 21, 1929 in Bischopsburg, Germany. She walked away from the Russian Advance at the end of WWII to the British forces and spent two years in a refugee camp. She obtained a position as a nanny to the children of Mr. P.B.C. Moore in England. Mr. Moore later became secretary to Queen Elizabeth and was knighted as Lord Wolverton. In 1952 Marta met Ray Cawsey in Byfleet, Surrey, England and they married on July 9, 1955. Ray and Marta immigrated to Canada in November 1957. They have three daughters: Sandra (Rick) Martin of Montreal, Canada, Susan of Vancouver, Canada and Sonia (Ted) Wrather of Raleigh, NC and three grandchildren, Stephen, Katherine and Gwen.
In 1979 Ray and Marta then immigrated to Nashville, TN and in 1989 moved to Auburn, Illinois, where Ray held the position of Vice-President of Quality at Dickey-john Corporation.
Marta’s parents, five brothers and one sister preceded her in death.
She enjoyed living on and playing golf at the Edgewood Golf Course. She was an avid knitter and tennis enthusiast.
Visitation: 9:30 – 10:00 am, Monday, August 22, 2011 at St. Benedict Catholic Church in Auburn.
Funeral Mass: 10:00 am, Monday, August 22, 2011 at St. Benedict Catholic Church in Auburn with Father John Nolan officiating. A reception at the parish center will follow the funeral mass.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to St. John’s Hospital, Cardiac Services / Prairie Heart Institute.
