SPRINGFIELD – Marilyn A. Meyer, age 86, of Springfield died at 9:36 a.m. Thursday, January 28, 2010, at St. John’s Hospital.
She was born April 17, 1923, in Springfield, IL to William A. and Christine Reisch Meyer. Marilyn lived in Springfield most of her life and worked as a secretary at Illiopolis War Plant during WWII and was employed at A.J. Dirksen Furniture store and later at Hugh Garvey Enterprises. From 1956 to 1966, she worked in Madrid, Spain in a civilian capacity for the U.S. Navy, then returned to Springfield and resumed her employment at Hugh Garvey Enterprises. She was a member of Blessed Sacrament Church. Graduated from Ursuline Academy and Springfield College in Illinois and completed her third year of college in Fribourg, Switzerland. She loved to travel, play cards, read and spend time with family and friends.
She is survived by 1 sister, Christine Meyer of Springfield; 3 nieces, Mary T. Terri O’Brien, Jackie O’Brien (companion, Thomas Apke) and Karin O’Brien (companion, Bill Crenshaw); 2 nephews, James (wife, Angela Tin) O’Brien and William (wife, Barbara Ayers) O’Brien; and 3 great-nephews, Brendan, Robert and Eric O’Brien.
She was preceded in death by her parents; 1 brother, William Tony Meyer; 1 sister, Gretchen Meyer O’Brien; and brother-in-law, Robert J. O’Brien.
Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Monday, February 1, 2010, at Staab Funeral Home, with a prayer service at 4 p.m. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, February 2, 2010, at Blessed Sacrament Church, with Reverend David Hoefler officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
