SPRINGFIELD – Marie Anna Carpenter, 96, of Springfield died at 6:35 a.m. Friday, April 2, 2010, at St. John’s Hospital.
She was born Sept. 18, 1913, in Springfield, the daughter of Gustav and Katharine Nowak Malensky. She married Paul Nolan Carpenter in 1940; he preceded her in death in 1990.
She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Elmer and Henry Malensky; three sisters, Gertrude Carpenter, Emma Brown and Evelyn Davison; an infant sister, Mildred; and a great-grandson, Spc. Jack A. Gallaher.
She is survived by a son, Paul F. (wife, Sharon) Carpenter of Springfield; three grandchildren, Leann M. Fox (Kerry Davidson), Christine L. Smith (Barry Ritter), and Paul T. (wife, Casey) Carpenter; 13 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; a sister, Marilyn (husband, Harold) Sturm of Springfield; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Marie Anna was a lifelong resident of Springfield. She was a homemaker and self-employed. She worked at Service Cleaners and retired as co-owner of Illinois Window Cleaning.
She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, April 8, 2010, at Staab Funeral Home. Marie Anna’s body will lie in state from 9 a.m. until the time of funeral services at 10 a.m. Friday, April 9, 2010, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Paul Olson officiating. Burial will be at Oak Ridge Cemetery.
