SPRINGFIELD – Lyle G. Blakey, 88, of Springfield died at 8 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 3, 2009, at his home.
He was born May 30, 1921, in Taylorville, the son of Orville and Frances Sanders Blakey. He married Jessie I. Solomon on Feb. 20, 1949.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters; and three brothers.
He is survived by his wife, Jessie I. Blakey; two
daughters, Paulette Medley of Springfield and Jeanine (Bruce) Evans of Bloomington; three
grandchildren, Michael Medley, Megan (Jason) Maas and Kristin (Adam) Krumtinger; a sister,
Helen Brooks of Auburn; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Lyle worked at Allis Chalmers/Fiat Allis as a machine operator, retiring after 36 years.
He was a veteran of the United States Navy, serving during World War II. He was a member of Elliot Avenue Baptist Church. He was a great lover of animals. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge and Ansar Shrine. He was a member of the 4B’s Hunting Group and was an avid deer, pheasant, rabbit, and quail hunter.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday Sept. 7, 2009, at Staab Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m.
Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2009, at Camp Butler National Cemetery, where military honors will be conducted by the Sangamon County Interveterans Burial Detail and Robert Green officiating.
The family requests that donations be made to the American Cancer Society or the Animal Protective League.
