SPRINGFIELD – Louis M. Gortz, 86, of Springfield died at 6:04 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 5, 2008, at St. John’s Hospital.
He was born Dec. 18, 1921, in Springfield, the son of Joseph and Mary Pekol Gortz. He married Toni Marchizza on May 20, 1950.
He was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters and two brothers.
Mr. Gortz, a lifelong resident of Springfield, was in the grocery business for 26 years and co-owned Capitol Park Market on Wesley Avenue with his family. He retired from the state of Illinois after eight years of service in the Driver’s License Division, where he was a supervisor.
He served during World War II in the U.S. Army infantry as a second lieutenant. He was the recipient of a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star. He was of the Catholic faith and a past member of the Elks Club.
Surviving are his wife, Toni Gortz of Springfield; and several nieces and nephews, some who were especially close and loved him deeply and he them.
A memorial gathering will be held from 5 p.m. until time of memorial services at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 16, 2008, at Staab Funeral Home with the Rev. Robert Jallas officiating. Sangamon County Interveterans Burial Detail will conduct military honors. Private burial will be held at a later date.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
