Lillian Hood Stevens

September 19, 1914 - January 26, 2009

Lillian Hood Stevens, 94, died on January 26, 2009 at Oak Terrace Healthcare Center. Her husband, Jack Stevens, preceded her in death in December of 1963. Lillian is survived by her step son, Ken (Wife: Jean) of Hawaii and two second cousins, David of New York State, and Elinore of Scotland. She was a lifetime member of First Presbyterian Church in Springfield.

She was born a coalminer’s daughter in 1914 in Divernon. Her father, John Douglas Hood, taught her to work smart and not to settle for second best. Her mother, the former Gertrude Fernandes, taught her the values of social propriety and respect for tradition. Lillian never forgot these lessons.

When Lillian showed an aptitude for playing the piano, her father bought her a Steinway. In time, she became an accomplished pianist and played many recitals. Lillian also had skills for accounting. When the great depression started, she became a Public Accountant. Her specialty was the automotive industry. During World War II she became a Certified General Motors Accountant which among other accounting specialties required that she commit to memory the cost of all GM parts for all their automobiles. She was twice elected President of the Pilot Club, a prestigious women’s international business organization.

In later years she competed for an important civil service position with the State of Illinois. She won the post and after receiving her Master’s Degree in Accounting at Sangamon College, rose to the important level of Internal Auditor for the Insurance Department. Lillian held that job until she retired in her 70’s. Now Lillian has gone to Glory and, with Jack, walks hand in hand in the light of God’s Grace. Certainly she is happy now! Although we will miss her, it’s only a matter of time until we are all together again.

A visitation will be held at Staab Funeral Home on Saturday, January 31, 2009 from 12:30 p.m. until the time of service at 1 p.m. The funeral service will be conducted by Reverend Dr. Clifford J. Hayes. Interment will follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery.
