SPRINGFIELD – Leroy W. Hill, 82, of Springfield died Saturday, Jan. 17, 2009, at Maple Ridge Nursing Home in Lincoln, following a lengthy illness.
He was born May 18, 1926, in Springfield, to Wesley and Annabelle Harbor Hill. He served in the U.S. Navy from October 1943 through May 1947. He married Dorothy Louise (Austin) Hill.
Mr. Hill worked at Pillsbury Mills until his retirement. He was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church and was active in their Dart Ball League. He raced homing pigeons, and raised beagles and collies. His greatest pride was his grandchildren.
Leroy was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy (Austin) Hill; his parents; his brothers, Laverne, Leon, Louis, Lorn, Lawrence and Lou Derring; and a sister, Laraine Hill.
Surviving is a daughter, Cherlyn (Larry) Harness of Sherman; grandchildren, Michael (Wendi) Huston, of Grand Rapids, Mich., Shaun Harness (companion, Carmen Jones) of Highland, and Jennifer Harness of Sherman; and great-granddaughters, Addison Jones and Isabella Harness. Also surviving are his sisters, Lorene Harbour, Lorella (Bob) Hudgins and Lauralynn (Harold) Tunstall, all of Springfield, and Lawanda (David) Volker of Pleasant Plains.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2009, at Staab Funeral Home with a funeral service there at 10 a.m. Thursday, January 22, 2009, with Pastor James Stuenkel officiating. Burial will be in Camp Butler National Cemetery, where the Sangamon County Interveterans Burial Detail will conduct military honors.
Memorials may be made to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Sherman.
