Leonard “Lenny” Lavern Avery, III, 25, of Springfield, went to be with the Lord on February 7, 2014. Lenny was born on June 30, 1988, the son of Leonard Lavern and Carol Gleeson, Avery, Jr.
He attended Williamsville High School and graduated in 2005. While in school he decided to join the United States Marine Corps which he did on July 24, 2006 at Camp Pendleton, CA where he enlisted as a Rifleman. During his service he served in Operation Iraqi Freedom, from January 5, 2008- February 7, 2008 in Kuwait and from May 22, 2009 to December 16, 2009 in Afghanistan. He was honorably discharged from the Marine Corps on July 23, 2010 and joined the Illinois Air National Guard on August 19, 2010 as a member of the 183rd Civil Engineering Squadron and continued to serve until his death. After the military he went on to do many things in his life. He joined the Sherman Volunteer Fire Department on October 6, 2010 as a Firefighter. Lenny loved his family and friends and his dog, Gilly. He will be greatly missed each and every day.
He is survived by his mom, Carol Avery of Springfield; his dad, Randall Williams of Campbell, MO; two sisters, Nina Avery of Springfield and her children, Hailey, Lucas and William Humphrey and Nolan Hill all of Lake Mills, IA and his twin sister, Kayla Avery of Springfield; many aunts, uncles and cousins, including Aunt Susie and cousins, Kayla, Josh and Adam.
He was preceded in death by his birth dad, Leonard Avery; his uncle, John Gleeson and his maternal and paternal grandparents.
Visitation: 4-7 pm, Thursday, February 13, 2014 at Staab Funeral Home.
Funeral Service: 11 am, Friday, February 14, 2014 at Staab Funeral Home with Reverend Dr. John Charlton, III, officiating.
Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery, where Sangamon County Interveterans Burial Detail along with the Illinois National Guard will conduct military honors.
Memorial contributions may be made to Staab Funeral Home to assist the family with funeral and other expenses.
