SPRINGFIELD – Lawrence P. Devocelle, 67, a resident of Springfield for all of his life, died at 6:46 a.m. Sunday, March 21, 2010, at St. John’s Hospital.

He was born July 14, 1942, in Springfield, IL, the son of Frank and Emma Sommer Devocelle.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Mr. Devocelle retired from the Illinois Department of Rehabilitation Services after 35 years.

Lawrence was a member of St. Joseph’s Church in Springfield. He received his undergraduate degree from Loyola University and his master’s degree from University of Illinois Springfield. After retirement he dedicated his time volunteering with St. Joseph’s Parish and the Master Gardener Program. He also enjoyed spending significant time with his grandchildren.

Surviving are a daughter, Amy Devocelle of Fort Collins, Colo.; three sons, Michael (Christine) Devocelle of Champaign, Jeremy Devocelle of Indianapolis and Aaron (Kristi) Devocelle of Petersburg; friend, Terry Hogg; several grandchildren; a brother, Frank (Molly) Devocelle of Olathe, Kan.; and several nieces.

Visitation will be held from 9 until time of funeral Mass at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 23, 2010, at St. Joseph’s Church, with Monsignor Thomas Holinga officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Joseph’s Church.
