Lawrence G. Whitcomb, 69, of Chatham, died at 1:04 am, Saturday, December 16, 2017 at Heritage Health. He was born July 11, 1948 in Springfield to George and Alberta Long Whitcomb, and they preceded him in death. He married Rebecca Kern on December 31, 1971, and she survives.
He is also survived by his two children, daughter, Shannon (Kati Ayers) Whitcomb-Ayers of Springfield and son, Aaron (Kristi) Whitcomb of Auburn, three grandchildren: Isabella Rickerd, Brody Whitcomb and Hunter Whitcomb, one sister, Kathy Smith of Riverton, one brother, Steve (Paula) Whitcomb, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Lawrence was a U.S. Army veteran. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and attended Real Life Church. He worked as a mechanic at Springfield Mass Transit District, was a paper carrier for the State Journal Register for over 25 years and worked part-time for over 20 years at Illini Country Club. He was an avid sports fan especially of the Steelers, Illini and Cardinals. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and adopted father to many.
Visitation: 8:30 – 10:30 am, Friday, December 22, 2017 at Staab Funeral Home – Springfield.
Funeral Service: 10:30 am, Friday, December 22, 2017 at Staab Funeral Home – Springfield with Pastor Clint Cook officiating. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery where military honors will be conducted.
Memorial contributions may be made to Real Life Church.
The family requests casual attire for services.
