Laura Ann Groth, 71, of Springfield quietly passed away on Thursday, January 19, 2012 at St. John’s Hospital.
She was born on October 19, 1940 to Robert J. Groth I and Evelyn M. Maurer Groth in Springfield, IL.
Laura Ann was born during WWII, before the discovery of the Polio vaccine. Hence, when she had double pneumonia at the age of 2 months she began her journey through life with cerebral palsy. As a child, her Dad made special structures for swings and tricycles so she could enjoy some of the things that her siblings and other children were doing. Her mother was one of five people to start up the first school for the physically disabled in Springfield, where she loved going to school each day.
Laura Ann lived at home until the mid 1970’s then went to live in Bethphage Mission (a Lutheran mission for the disabled) in Axtel, Nebraska for several years. Since returning to Springfield, she has attended the UCP (United Cerebral Palsy) day program and has lived in a UCP group home.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother Robert John Groth II.
Laura Ann is survived by her two brothers- Ernest Groth (fiancé Zoe Staats) of Springfield and Emil “Bud” Groth (wife, Pam) of San Diego, California, two sisters E. Roberta Groth and Doris Schrock (husband, Jim) of Springfield. She leaves behind several nieces (including special niece, Bree Schrock), nephews, great nieces, an Uncle as well as several Aunts and cousins.
Private burial with Pastor Greg Busboom officiating will be held at Oak Ridge Cemetery.
