Larry J. Woods

I moved to Hudson around 1970 and started sixth grade at a new school. I had Mr. Woods for a teacher and coach, the first male teacher I ever had. I now know he was only in his mid twenties, but seemed so much older, in a good way. I can't say how important that was for me as my Dad worked out of town quite often. I can still remember to this day one of his favorite words, probably from a Geography lesson, that word was, fjord. He just liked the way it sounded. Mr. Woods also helped me as a coach, primarily in basketball, as I had never played it organizationally. I can also still remember he and his friends coming back to the grade school on Friday or Saturday nights to play basketball. A few of his students would hang around and get to shoot baskets when they took a break. And if we were lucky and they needed extra players, get to play with them. Thank you Mr. Woods for helping me become a better person. My heart goes out to the Woods family, may peace be with you all.

Trev&Chad... I'm so sorry to hear about your Dad. Guys, I had no idea he was a coach!! I think of my coaches often, and the impact that ripples through my life, even unto today. They are some of my most fond...and important...memories. God bless Coach...and God bless the entire Woods' clan!! ~Kevin ps. I felt part of the Woods family for much of my youth, living for a time directly across the street on Dale. A bunch of us would congregate in the Woods' backyard for various sports, especially basketball where a hoop was attached to a tree. It seemed we could all dunk because the hoop was pretty low. And we became the first class to graduate from Oakdale Elementary. A group that continued as friends forever, it seemed, through NCHS and then off to various colleges. Even then, the Woods residence, which Larry shared with Reid Stein, was a gathering spot. Every single high school reunion and mini-reunion, whether some of us were there or not, Larry was there. He was the one who knew everything about our class. He never seemed to forget anything. The class has lost a lot of history that can never be recovered. And we've lost a piece of ourselves.

Mr. Woods was my fifth and sixth grade school teacher and he was ALWAYS a gentleman and someone to look up to. He was also a wonderful coach. Absolutely nothing but fond memories and I appreciate the role he played in shaping my life.
