SHERMAN – Reverend Joseph G. Kromenaker, age 87, of Sherman, IL died at St. John’s Hospital at 8:45 p.m. Monday, May 10, 2010. He was born in Chicago, IL on August 29, 1922, the son of George and Agnes Dettloff Kromenaker.
He was preceded in death by his parents and 4 sisters,Marie Agnes Kromenaker, Terree Nelsen, Margaret O’Malley and Marie Parker. He is survived by several nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. until time of funeral Mass at 10 a.m. Friday, May 14, 2010, at St. John Vianney Church in Sherman. A second visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until time of funeral Mass at 11 a.m. Monday, May 17, 2010, at St. Ferdinand Church in Chicago. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery in River Grove, IL.
Father Kromenaker was ordained a priest on June 8, 1947, his service included: Blessed Sacrament, Springfield 1947; teacher/chaplain of Springfield Junior College and Ursuline Academy 1948; assistant at Our Savior Jacksonville, 1949; St. Mary Alton, 1952; St. Francis Cabrini, Springfield 1954; Cathedral, Springfield 1956. He served as pastor at: St. Anne, Edgewood, 1958, Visitation BVM Alexander 1966, Sacred Heart Villa Grove 1968. He served as parochial administrator at St. Aloysius Litchfield, 1969. He served as professor of education at Illinois State University, Normal 1972. He received his master’s degree and Ph.D. He was head librarian at DeLaSalle High School, Chicago 1978, Mendel High School, Chicago, 1981, Mt. Carmel High School, Chicago, 1990, and Leo Catholic High School, Chicago 1992. He retired in 1997. He was a resident priest at St. Ferdinand Parish in Chicago until 2004. He was also a commercial pilot.
