SPRINGFIELD – Joseph Joe R. Melnyk, 94, of Springfield died at 3:55 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 5, 2009, at St. John’s Hospice.
He was born Aug. 28, 1914, in New Britain, Conn., the son of Joseph and Mary Wolk Melnyk. He married Helen E. Jacks on Sept. 21, 1947.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Andrew, Michael and John Melnyk; and a sister, Anne McAloon.
He is survived by his wife, Helen E. Melnyk of Springfield; a daughter, Jane (husband, Chuck) Jones of Springfield; a son, Mark (wife, Sharon) Melnyk of Savannah, Ga.; four grandchildren, Derek Weinberg, Tracy Melnyk (husband, David Gluth), Joe Melnyk and Erica Jones; two great-grandchildren, Kelvin and Karlee Hatchett; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Joe lived in Springfield since 1965. He retired from the state of Illinois.
He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church. He was an avid golfer and reader. He enjoyed gardening and yard work. He was a former member of Nighthawks Dance Group and enjoyed traveling. He was a volunteer usher at Sangamon Auditorium.
Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. until the time of funeral services at 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 9, 2009, at Grace Lutheran Church, with the Revs. Thomas Christell and Juli Lejman-Guy officiating. Burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2009, at Camp Butler National Cemetery.
