SPRINGFIELD – Joseph P. Sonny Sandhaas, 79, of Springfield died Wednesday, August 19, 2009, at 1:35 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Home. Joseph was born September 4, 1929, in Springfield.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Elizabeth Boehner Sandhaas. He married Anna Marie Eck in 1954; she preceded him in death on April 4, 1987.
He is survived by four children, Kari Sandhaas (husband, Mike Matejka) of Bloomington, Robert (wife, Anne) Sandhaas of Houston, Ron (wife, Rod) Sandhaas of New Berlin, and Lawrence (wife, Suzanne Hoke) Sandhaas of Milan; four grandchildren, Loretta, Julia, Rachael and Kyle; two stepgrandchildren, Brian (Patricia) Ford and Doug Ford; two step-great-grandchildren, Brianne and Issac; and one sister, Betty Sleeter, Albuquerque, N.M.
Joseph operated the family business, Joe’s Garage, on North First St. in Springfield. He valued the company of his customers, friends and family. He was a skilled auto mechanic, enjoyed the family dogs, attending car shows, and later in life, took up ballroom dancing. He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Church, Knights of Columbus, and was a Korean War veteran serving in the U.S. Army. He endured Parkinson’s Disease for over 16 years.
Visitation is Tuesday, August 25, 2009, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Staab Funeral Home, with prayers at 4 p.m. An additional visitation will be held from 9 to 10 a.m. on Wednesday, August 26, 2009, at St. Joseph’s Home, where the Mass of Christian burial will follow at 10 a.m. Burial will be held at Calvary Cemetery in Springfield.
