Joseph “Joe” Kevin Canavan

PAWNEE – Joseph “Joe” Kevin Canavan, 74, of Pawnee, formerly of Springfield, died Wednesday, May 9, 2007 at St. John’s Hospice.

He was born December 14, 1932 in Springfield, IL, the son of Thomas and Susan Clusker Canavan, Sr. He first married Carolyn E. Hoffman and they divorced. He then married Patsy Albrecht on September 19, 1990. His parents and one brother, John Canavan, preceded him in death.

Mr. Canavan was a letter carrier for the United States Postal Service, retiring in 1988. He was a United States Air Force veteran serving during the Korean Conflict. He also served in the Illinois Air National Guard, retiring in 1988. He was a member of Sacred Heart Church, DAV, Eagle’s Aerie #437, Elk’s Lodge #158, and Knights of Columbus in Chatham, where he was a life member. He was also a member of Springfield VFW, American Legion of Chatham, Korean War Veterans’ Association. Mr. Canavan was an avid Cubs fan and enjoyed playing cards, fishing, golfing, and traveling. He was a 1951 graduate of Feitschans High school.

Survivors: wife, Patsy Canavan of Pawnee; four daughters, Kathy Rakes, Diane Canavan, Carole (husband, Robert) Juranek, and Maureen (husband, Patrick) O’Connor, all of Springfield; one son, Michael (wife, Donna) Canavan of Springfield; two stepdaughters, Michelle (husband, Charles) Rivera of Downer’s Grove and Traci (husband, Rick) Ondrey of Pawnee; nine grandchildren, Thomas and Steven Rakes, Neil and Evan Juranek, Ryan and Nathan Canavan, and Erich, Samantha, and Andrew O’Connor; four step-grandchildren, Ryan and Eric Rivera, Jacob Nash Ondrey, and Corey Ondrey; two brothers, William (wife, Nan) Canavan of Plainville, CT and Thomas Canavan of Springfield; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Parkinson’s Foundation, St. John’s Hospice, or Quincy Veterans’ Home.

Visitation will be held 4:00-7:00 p.m., Thursday, May 10, 2007. Prayers: 4:00 p.m. Funeral Mass: 10:30 a.m., Friday, May 11, 2007 at Sacred Heart Church, Reverend Anthony Schmidt officiating. Burial: Camp Butler National Cemetery, where military honors will be conducted. Staab Funeral Home of Service.
