Joseph Skerly, age 89, died at 12:55 pm, Friday, October 2, 2020 at Villa Health Care East in Sherman, IL. He was born in Bartley, West Virginia, February 27, 1931 as the only child to Joseph and Stella (Swinkola) Skerly. After his father’s death in 1931, his mother moved them to Meadville, Pennsylvania where Joseph grew up until he enlisted in the Air Force. He served in the Air Force from 1950 until 1954. After returning home, he married and he and his wife adopted a daughter Lisa. They later divorced and he married Margaret (Bonnie) Porter in January 1966 in Gary, Indiana and his job took them to southern California. Three loving and caring children were born to this union: daughter, Amy Skerly and sons, Joseph Skerly Jr. and Michael Skerly.

Joseph started working at Friden Business Machines in the mid 50’s in Meadville, PA. He had the opportunity to travel the United States during his employment. He worked for the same company for 36 years retiring in 1990. At that time they moved to Carterville, Illinois to be near family. In 2004 they moved to Springfield, Illinois.

Joseph was preceded in death by his parents, his grandparents, mother-in-law, Martha Porter Oxford, sister-in-law Doris Baker and several aunts and uncles.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret (Bonnie); daughter, Amy (wife, Missy); sons, Joseph Jr. (wife Elle), and Michael Skerly (wife, Debbie); two granddaughters, Erin and Keryn Skerly; sister-in-law, Charlotte Bryan; brothers-in-law, John Bryan and John Baker; three nieces; four nephews and three Swinkola cousins.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Joseph will be cremated and interred at White’s Chapel Cemetery near Marion, Kentucky.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project or Villa Health Care East in Sherman, IL.
