Joseph J. Deloney, 94 of Springfield, IL died at 11:45 a.m. Sunday, January 2, 2011 at St. John’s Hospital. He was born on June 6, 1916 in Springfield, IL to August and Hannah Mahoney Deloney. He married Isabelle Cervellone in 1951 and she died in 2004. He was also preceded in death by his parents and 4 brothers; Pat, Albert, Auggie and Bill Deloney.
Mr. Deloney was a lifelong resident of Springfield. He retired as a detective for the Springfield Police Department. He served in the United States Army during WWII in the following theatres; Rome Arno, Southern France Rhineland and Central Europe. He was awarded the American Defense Service Ribbon, Victory Medal, European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with 4 Bronze Battle Stars, 5 overseas service Bars, 1 service stripe, and good conduct medal. Joseph was a diehard CUB fan.
He is survived by a sister, Margaret Deloney; a sister-in-law, Betty Deloney; a brother, Harold Deloney all of Springfield, IL and several cousins including; Grace Ebken of Kilbourne, IL and Robert Moakley of Springfield, IL, who were his caregivers. Also surviving him are several nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 10:30-11:30 a.m. Wednesday, January 5, 2011 at St. Joseph Church.
Funeral Mass: 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, January 5, 2011 at St. Joseph Church with Monsignor Thomas Holinga officiating.
Burial will be at Camp Butler National Cemetery where military honors will be conducted by the Sangamon County Interveterans Burial Detail.
