SPRINGFIELD – John W. Lahnum, 89, of Springfield died Saturday, January 16, 2010 at Heritage Manor. He was born in Monmouth, IL on June 3, 1920.
He was raised in Mattoon, IL. He married Beulah Jones in Charleston on December 25, 1940.
During World War II, he was a foreman at a Briggs Plant in Detroit, MI, where wings were made for B-29 Bombers. After the war, he returned to Charleston where he worked for Midwest Homes and was then transferred to Erie, PA and then to Indiana. John also worked at C.A. Dawson, Co. in Springfield for a number of years and after that worked part time for Contractors Lumber City.
He is survived by his wife, Beulah. They celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary on Christmas. He also leaves behind 5 children: Kathy Eggleston of Springfield, John E. Lahnum of Macomb, Deborah Powers of Springfield, Richard (wife: Ronda) Lahnum of Sherman and Michael (wife: Leisa) Lahnum of Rochester; 8 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; 1 daughter; Marsha Long; stepfather, Oren Jay; 2 stepsisters; and 2 stepbrothers.
Visitation will be from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm Tuesday, January 19, 2010 at Staab Funeral Home with a funeral service at 1:00 pm with Reverend Sylvester Weatherall officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Kumler United Methodist Church, Alzheimer’s Association or the charity of donor’s choice.
