John W. Johnston

SPRINGFIELD – John W. Johnston, 78, a resident of Springfield for the past 25 years, died at noon Thursday, Oct. 4, 2007, at Memorial Medical Center. He was formerly of Sullivan, Belleville, Murphysboro, Carbondale, Alexandria, Va., and Auburn.

He was born Aug. 2, 1929, in East St. Louis, the son of Earnest and Hazel Hughes Johnston. He married Alice M. Corell on Sept. 21, 1951. His parents; three brothers, Edward, Bob and Donald; and two sisters, Dorothy and Reba, preceded him in death.

Mr. Johnston retired from the U.S. Army after 37 years as a brigadier general. He was appointed as director of the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs by Gov. James Thompson and served through the Ryan administration.

He was a member of American Legion Post 32, National Order of the Purple Heart, Veterans of Foreign Wars, AMVETS, Masonic Lodge, Shriners, Order of the Eastern Star and many other military organizations. He also enjoyed fishing, cooking and gardening. He was a member of the Church of Christ Parkway.

Surviving are his wife, Alice M. Johnston; a daughter, Cheryl (husband, Paul) Sailer of Pekin; a son, Jeffery (wife, Susan) Johnston of Las Vegas; four grandsons, Paul Sailer and Nicholas, Michael and Zachary Johnston; and brother, Butch Johnston of Belleville.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon Thursday, Oct. 11, 2007, at Staab Funeral Home. Services will be at noon Thursday at Staab Funeral Home, with Bob Teel officiating. Burial will be in Camp Butler National Cemetery, where military honors will be conducted.
