John Robert Powell, Sr., 69, of Springfield, died at 1:20 am, Monday, November 6, 2017 at his home. He was born April 20, 1948 in Burlington, IA, to Robert and Forrest Crapnell Powell. He married Joyce Ann Mogle Sullivan and she survives.
Also surviving are five children, Marleen (Randy) Cooke of Chatham, John Robert (Pamela) Powell, Jr. of Monmouth, Jim (Sarah) Sullivan, Andy (Amber) Powell and Valerie Fisher, all of Springfield; thirteen grandchildren; three great grandchildren; one brother, William R. (Marilyn) Powell of Oswego and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
John was a US Army veteran serving during the Vietnam War. He was an Internal Auditor for the State of Illinois Lottery and Department of Revenue and in later years worked at Elm Transit. He enjoyed fishing.
Visitation: 9:30 – 11:30 am, Thursday, November 9, 2017 at Staab Funeral Home – Springfield.
Funeral Service: 11:30 am, Thursday, November 9, 2017 at Staab Funeral Home with Pastor Brian Wilmarth officiating. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery where military honors will be conducted.

John and I went through the Stronghurst school system together and attended the same Methodist Church. I always enjoyed his sense of humor. He could be mischievous, given the chance, but he always had a kind heart. Rest in peace, John.
