John R. DeGroot, 51, of Chatham died at 3:30 p.m., Friday, June 4, 2010, at Memorial Medical Center.
He was born in Springfield, Illinois on July 7, 1958, to John E. and Betty McCombs DeGroot. He married Mildred Loraine Colvin on January 4, 1986; and she survives him.
Also surviving are 1 son, John J. DeGroot (fiancee, Jennifer Adams) of Chatham; mother and step-father, Betty and Walter Vick of Springfield; 2 sisters, Becky (Kevin) Gregory of Chatham and Julie DeGroot of Springfield; 1 brother, Randy (Esther) DeGroot of Springfield; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his father and 1 daughter, Amanda DeGroot.
John was a member of VFW Post 755, former member of America Legion Post 32 and DAV Hall Hagler Chapter 15. He loved fishing, camping and boating.
John was a U.S. Army veteran serving from 1979 to 1983. He formerly owned and operated DeGroot Home Improvement.
Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Monday, June 7, 2010, at Staab Funeral Home. A funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 8, 2010, at Staab Funeral Home, with Pastor Fred Prince officiating. Burial will be in Camp Butler National Cemetery, with military honors conducted by the Sangamon County Interveterans Burial Detail.
