SPRINGFIELD – John O’Connell Jr., 61, of
Springfield died at 7:20 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2010, at Memorial Medical Center.
He was born Dec. 29, 1948, in Springfield, the son of John and Hazel Sweeton O’Connell Sr.
He married Ella L. Spitzenberger on Oct. 19, 1968.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his grandma, Virginia Sweeton; and stepfather, George Debrovolny.
He is survived by his wife, Ella L. O’Connell of Springfield; a daughter, Heather O’Connell of Springfield; a son, John O’Connell III of Springfield; three grandchildren, David O’Connell, Andrew Goodman and Mary Beth Goodman; two sisters, Linda (Bill) Bean and Kathy Gue, both of Springfield; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
John was a lifelong resident of Springfield. He worked as a baker at Eisner’s Bakery and retired after 35 years in May of 1999 from the Illinois Department of Transportation, where he worked as a messenger.
He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Church. His greatest love was watching after and playing with his grandchildren. He also enjoyed playing the lottery and socializing with his neighbors and greeting people.
A memorial gathering will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 5, 2010, at Staab Funeral Home.
