John Norman Durham

SPRINGFIELD – John Norman Durham, 62, of Springfield passed away, with his family by his side, on January 3, 2010, at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield, IL.

Mr. Durham was born on May 16, 1947, the son of Edward and Wilma Durham. John was born and raised in Springfield, IL, and was a member of Eastview Baptist Church. John was a Marine and a Vietnam veteran. He received a National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and a Good Conduct Medal. After returning home from serving his country, John married Vicki Hawkes on October 27, 1968 at Roanoke Baptist Church, with Reverend White officiating. John was a mechanic at the Springfield Police Department for many years before pursuing a new career in computer technology, which had become his new passion. Before his passing, he was employed as a computer tech for Ameren in Pawnee, IL.

John enjoyed spending time with his family, friends and grandkids. John loved working on computers, having lunch with his mother at Ryan’s and helping anyone in need of it.

He is survived by his wife, Vicki Hawkes Durham of Springfield; his sons, Mike Durham, John Durham and Jimmy Durham, all of Springfield; his daughter, Chrystal (Josh) Heneisen of Springfield; his mother, Wilma Reese of Springfield; five sisters, Kay (George) Downey of Springfield, Vickie (Jack) Williams of Springfield, Debbie (companion, Ron Carter) Talbot of Springfield, Diane (John) Thresher of Pekin and Karen (James) Hope of Springfield; five brothers, Larry (Barb) Durham and Tom Durham, both of Springfield, Rich (Jane) Durham of Pekin and Randy Durham and Dennis Durham, both of Springfield. John had eight grandkids, Christopher Dunlevy, Heather (Jason) Lennox, Rachel Devault, Celeste, Josh, Mikey and Jonny Durham and Keegan Heneisen, all of Springfield; one great-grandson, Christian; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, close friends, and adopted children.

John was preceded in death by his father, Edward Durham; stepfather, William Reese, stepsister, Sue Rogers; and stepbrother, Dave Reese.

A visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday, January 6, 2010, at Staab Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 12:00 p.m. Thursday, January 7, 2010, at Staab Funeral Home. Pastor Bennie Fisher will be officiating. Burial will be at Camp Butler National Cemetery, where Sangamon County Interveterans Burial Detail will conduct military honors.
