John Michael “Cozy” Cowles, 71, of Springfield died at 3:50 pm Monday, July 27, 2015 at his home. He was born May 6, 1944 in Lincoln, IL to William Dyer and Eloise Baggs Cowles. He married Carolyn Lane on February 25, 1968.
Surviving are his wife, Carolyn and a daughter, Carrie (Brian) Smith, both of Springfield; a son, Robert Charles Cowles of Daytona, FL; a daughter-in-law, Rebecca Cowles Gathman; four grandchildren, Cory and Taylor Smith, Robert Michael “My Bud” Cowles and Meagan McLaughlyn; two great grandchildren, Fayth and Brystol Smith; sister-in-law, JoAnn Cowles of Springfield; a brother, Robert (Shirley) Cowles of New Berlin; one aunt and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, William J. Cowles; a sister, Bonnie Jean Cowles and a great granddaughter, Londyn Cole Smith.
John was a member of Luther Memorial Evangelical Lutheran Church since he was in the 1st grade. He also was confirmed there and married Carolyn there in 1968. Cozy was a member of St. Paul Masonic Lodge 500 AF&AM, Springfield Consistory, Ansar Shrine (Director’s Staff), Eagles Aerie #437 and Aqua Sports Club. He graduated from Feitshans High School in 1962 and was an awesome hurdler and went to State in 1961 and 1962. He attended Eastern Illinois University. Mr. Cowles was a member of Meat Cutters Local 543 and retired from the Illinois Secretary of State office in 2002. He served in the Illinois National Guard from 1965-1971. John was also a huge fan of Jeopardy on TV, the St. Louis Cardinals, Illini Basketball and the Chicago Bears.
Visitation: 4 – 7 pm Wednesday, August 5, 2015 at Staab Funeral Home. A Masonic Service will be held at 6:45 pm.
Funeral Service: 11:00 am Thursday, August 6, 2015 at Staab Funeral Home with Pastor Bill Zanton officiating.
A Celebration of Life will be held following the funeral at the Eagles Club, 2700 E. Ash, Springfield, IL.
