John L. Rutherford, 59, of Springfield died at 10:12 am, Thursday, December 29, 2011 at his home. He was born March 19, 1952 in Springfield, IL to James and Climma Lawson Rutherford. He married Seri Beckum on March 25, 1972 and she survives. Also surviving are three children, Sabrena Fagg, John G. (Teressa) Rutherford and Michael (Crystal) Rutherford all of Springfield; nine grandchildren; one great granddaughter; eight brothers and sisters and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
John was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran. He was active with Toys for Tots; Marine Corps League and was a member of Leathernecks.
Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, January 4, 2012 at Staab Funeral Home.
Funeral Service: 1 p.m., Thursday, January 5, 2012 at Staab Funeral Home with Vaughn Beeman officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park. Memorial Contributions may be made to Toys for Tots or to the American Cancer Society.

You were the best uncle anyone could ever ask for. I love u uncle john and i will miss u so much. I'm so lucky to have meet and got to know such a great man. You will always be in my heart. We are so sorry to here about Uncle John ,I know that we didn't see ya'll much.With us living here and ya'll there but we are still family.I never got the chance to tell him thank you for looking after my momma when my daddy went home to be with our father above.I'm not going to say good bye I'm just going to say See you one sweet day when he come's ack for us all.I will miss him and my heart does go out to each one of you I do know how it feels like to lose a dad but not a husband.I know one day i will i just pray it's not that soon he was such a young man but just remember this God wanted another Rose and it just happen to be our sweet Uncle John he is now with his momma and daddy and the other love one's who has gone beforer him .i have a lot of good memory's of him that i will treasure for a life time Rest In Peace Uncle John We Love You And Will MISS YOU love the Mefford Family

Some people say that I'm a member of family anymore cuz of the divoice but to me you was like a father.You was a friend to me and everyone around you will miss all time we had and the time we won't get to spend.Cuz no matter what was going on you was there if I need to talk about anything and that is what I'm going to miss the most and I never told u but I loved you

Seri, I don't know if we've met but I'm John's cousin on his dad's side. My dad Richard was his dad's brother. I'm sorry to hear of John's passing. My prayers and thoughts are with you and your family at this sad time.

Dad, I'm going to miss you greatly. As I write these words I feel like crying again in memory of your loss. I love you more than I could have ever told you in life. You were my inspiration, you pushed me to be a better man. I'm proud you were my father and will hold you forever in my heart and mind. There are many things I would love to say, times I'd love to share with everyone but all I can say is the fondest memories are the ones you take for granted as your making them. I still look back on the days and nights working on cars, trucks, and vans together. The many days spent putting windows in the house, these are the memories that jump to mind. Thinking of them now I realize you were happy to have me with you as we did all that frustrating work. I'm happy that you were able to see me complete my education as you pushed me to do and very proud you could at the very least see me enrolled in college. I leave these final words here and carry you with me through my life. I always loved you and know you loved all of us as well, Semper Fi Dad and be at peace. Your loving Son, Michael
