John F. “Jack” Tharp, 88, of Springfield, died at 3:57 am, Tuesday, October 1, 2013 at Lewis Memorial Christian Village. He was born November 29, 1924, in New Albany, IN, to James W. and Anna Mary Farr Tharp. He married Joyce E. Cooper on February 24, 1996, and she survives.
Also surviving are two daughters, Linda Cauley of Sand Springs, OK and Karen Tharp of Springfield; one son, John Tharp, Jr. of Centralia, IL; two grandchildren, Austin and Tyler Cauley; two nieces and one nephew.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Mona Mooney.
Jack was a graduate of Salmon P. Chase Law School in Ohio. He was a US Marine Veteran serving during WWII in the South Pacific. He was a Private Pilot and was a member of the Illinois Pilots Association. He had formerly been an FBI Special Agent and was a member of the Society of Former Special Agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigations, Inc. He retired in 1998 after 37 ½ years as President of the Illinois Telephone Association, representing all telephone companies in Illinois.
Visitation: 4-7 pm Friday, October 4, 2013 at Staab Funeral Home.
Graveside Service: 10:30 am, Saturday, October 5, 2013 at Oak Hill Cemetery in Palmyra.
