SPRINGFIELD – John Griffin, 87, of Springfield, formerly of Chicago, died at 9:20 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2008, at Regency Nursing Care Residence.
He was born Dec. 18, 1920, in Mississippi, the son of Bulice Griffin and Sara Robinson. He married Effie L. Miller in 1948; she preceded him in death on Oct. 19, 1998. He was also preceded in death by his parents; stepfather, John Dillon; and two brothers, David and Gerald Dillon.
Mr. Griffin retired from Pillsbury Mills. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during World War II. He was a member of Friendship Full Gospel Church. He enjoyed fishing and squirrel and rabbit hunting.
Surviving are two sisters, Mary Robinson of Union Pier, Mich., and Geraldine Browner of Harvey; a brother, Joseph (wife, Herman Louise) Dillon of Chicago; a niece, Kim Robinson; a nephew, Stevie (wife, Debra) Browner; and a host of cousins.
Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until time of services at 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 10, 2008, at Friendship Full Gospel Church, 1501 E. Washington St., with Pastor James R. Nicholas officiating. Burial will be in Camp Butler National Cemetery, where military honors will be conducted by the Sangamon County Interveterans Burial Detail and the Illinois Army National Guard Military Funeral Honors Team.
