John A. "Doc" Davidson

Senator John A. “Doc” Davidson, 87, of Springfield, died at 9:25 pm Tuesday, August 21, 2012 at Memorial Medical Center. He was born August 31, 1924 in West Point, MS to Homer and Anna Grosboll Davidson. He married Shirley Beard on August 8, 1953 and she survives. He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant son, John Homer Davidson; brother, Robert J. Davidson and two sisters, Anna Mae Bell and Dorcas McFarland.
Senator Davidson served in the Illinois State Legislature from 1973-1993, representing the 50th District covering Sangamon, Christian and Montgomery counties. He was a Chiropractor. He served in the United States Navy during World War II as a tail gunner on the USS Ticonderoga. He was past president of the Springfield Jaycees, member of the American Chiropractic Association, Illinois Chiropractic Society, Masonic Shrine Board Member, and American Legion Post #32. He was one of the founders of the Prairie State Games. He was a lifelong Illini Fan. Member of Sangamon County Board of Supervisors for 13 ½ years and chair for 2 ½ years. One of the Jaycee’s 10 Outstanding Young Men of America for 1954-1955, National Chiropractor of the Year for the American Chiropractic Association. He was the first recipient of this award in 1973. Dr. Davidson was in practice for forty-one years, retiring in 1993. He was a former member of the Governor’s Prayer Breakfast committee. One of the accomplishments he was most proud of was leading the legislative effort that secured the SIU School of Medicine to be seated in Springfield, providing world class care to Springfield and the surrounding areas.
Surviving are his wife, Shirley; two daughters, Anne E. Davidson of Springfield and Jane Marie (Dan) Seibert of Shelbyville; a son, John I. (Pamela) Davidson of Greenview; six grandchildren, Anna Patricia and John Clark Davidson and Laura Marie Seibert and Anne, Will and Stephen Hess and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation: 4 – 7 pm Friday, August 24, 2012 at Staab Funeral Home
Funeral Service: 10:00 am Saturday, August 25, 2012 at First United Methodist Church with Reverend Michael Paulson officiating. Burial will follow at Oakland Cemetery in Petersburg, IL where military honors will be conducted.
Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church Building Fund or National University of Health Science in Lombard,IL.
