Jerald(Jerry)D. Hamende of Springfield passed away on Tuesday, September 7, 2010 at 10:50 a.m. with his family surrounding him at his home. He was born April 13, 1946, the son of Aldolf and Helen Ballard Hamende. He married Mary Joyce(JJ)Goldbeck on August 19, 1977. He was preceded in death by his parents; 4 brothers: William, Marvin, Robert and Joe Hamende and 1 sister: Marilyn Patrick.
He is survived by his wife Mary Joyce (JJ) 3 daughters: Lori (Gary) Maltby of Rochester, Toni (Todd) Clark of Chatham and Heather (Companion: Laura Whetstone) Caillier of Springfield; 5 grandchildren: Baleigh and Nick Clark, Nathan and Nick Maltby, Cailyn Caillier and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Jerry was a member of the Church of the Little Flower and American Legion Post 32. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving in Vietnam 1967-1969 and received 2 Purple Hearts and several Vietnam service medals. He enjoyed fishing, landscaping, his grandchildren and family gatherings. He was an avid Cubs and Bears fan and was inducted into the Springfield Sports Hall of Fame in 1994 as a member of the 1964 Griffin High School Baseball Team. He was employed by the Secretary of State, Department of Police.
Visitation will be held 3-6 p.m. on Sunday, September 12, 2010 at Staab Funeral Home with prayers at 3:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 on Monday, September 13, 2010 at Church of the Little Flower with Father John Nolan and Monsignor John Ossola officiating. Burial will be held at Camp Butler National Cemetery at 2 p.m. with military honors conducted by the Sangamon County Interveterans Burial Detail.
Memorials may be made to Little Flower School or St. John’s Hospice.
