SPRINGFIELD – Jean E. Ahlberg Ph. D.. 75, of Springfield died at 1:52 pm, Thursday, August 12, 2010. She was born November 9, 1934 in Bologna, Italy to Bruno and Giannina De’ Franceschi Mattioli. She married the love of her life, Dennis on August 13, 1960 in Fairbury, IL. She is survived by her husband C. Dennis; 2 daughters, Suzie (Jerry) Lindsey of Nolensville, TN and Lisa (Dan) Schweska of Springfield, IL; 5 grandchildren, Nicholas, Erin and Joseph Schweska, Dima Lindsey, and Haylee (Michael) Nelson and several nieces, nephews and cousins in Italy, France and the United States. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Jean received The Springfield Educator of the Year in 1992, a doctoral scholar award in 1987 from SIU and The Alumni Achievement Award conferred by ISU in 1993. Jean was a charter member of the Academy of Lifelong Learning and Springfield Sister Cities program. She retired from Lanphier High School in 1994 and had privately taught French and Italian at Lawrence Learning Center after retirement. She received her bachelor’s degree from Illinois State University, her master’s degree from Sangamon State University and her Ph. D. from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale IL.
A visitation will be held from 5-7pm on Monday, August 16, 2010 at Staab Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 11am Tuesday, August 17, 2010 at Staab Funeral Home with Reverend Peter Harman officiating. Entombment: Oak Ridge Chapel Mausoleum, Springfield IL.
