James William Groesch

James “Jim” William Groesch, 90, of Springfield passed away May 19, 2014 at his home. He was born February 10, 1924 in Springfield, IL the son of George and Amelia “Molly” Fleck Groesch. He married Mary Ellen Meyer on November 27, 1947 and she preceded him in death. They were married 64 years.
Jim graduated from Lanphier High School in 1942 and then joined the U.S. Navy the same year. He served in World War II aboard the U.S.S. Tulsa, and was a member of the South China—Yang Tze River Asiatic Fleet. He was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1945. He was a route salesman and company supervisor for Butternut Bread and Hostess Bakery and was currently still employed as a Laboratory Technician at the orthodontic office of his son Dr. C. William Groesch upon his death. He was a member of the VFW, one of the original owners for King Pin Lanes, a member of the Knights of Columbus #364, a member of Christ the King Church, a member of the Holy Name Society at St. Cabrini and a regular attendee of the “Old Farts’ Breakfast Club.” In 2009, Jim traveled to Washington D.C. on an Honor Flight with fellow World War II veterans. He was a man who enjoyed hunting and fishing, but his true love was spending time with his wife and large family.

Jim leaves behind a legacy of 6 children, James M. Groesch of Bethalto, JoAnn Rolens (Mark), C. William Groesch (Lu Ann), Christine LeSeure (Mike), David M. Groesch (Alisa), and Mary E. Becker (Doug) all of Springfield; 14 grandchildren Jill Cummings, Jennifer Groesch, Jim Groesch, Jeff Mumaw, Christy Claycomb, Sarah Chandler, Mandy LeSeure, Beth LeSeure, Cory LeSeure, Ashley Bulpitt, Brent Groesch, Adrienne Groesch, Alison Becker and Matthew Becker. He is also survived by 11 great-grandchildren. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, siblings, Clara Mohay, Rose Groesch, Edith Midden, George “Brother Michael” Groesch, Marie Lawless, Bob Groesch, Wally Groesch and Armie Groesch, wife Mary Ellen, daughter-in-law Linda Benson Groesch, grandson Mark William Groesch and great-grandson Luke William Chandler.

Family will receive friends on Thursday, May 22, 2014 from 4-7 p.m. at Staab Funeral Home, 1109 S. Fifth Street, Springfield, IL. A funeral mass will be held on Friday, May 23, 2014 at 9:30 a.m. at Christ the King Church, 1920 Barberry Drive, Springfield, IL. Burial at Camp Butler Cemetery will be following the mass.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Land of Lincoln Honor Flight, 57 Country Place, Springfield, IL 62703. Staab Funeral Home at 1109 S. Fifth Street in Springfield, IL is in charge of all arrangements.
