James R. Wilkin

James R. Wilkin, 86, of Springfield, died at 9:57 am, Thursday, May 4, 2017 at Mill Creek Nursing Center. He was born October 17, 1930 in Springfield to Robert J. and Anna Mary (Devlin) Wilkin. He married Georgina Bruckner on December 29, 1951.

Surviving are his wife, Georgina of Springfield; two daughters, Mary (Terry) Barrow of Curran and Leigh Ann (Dan) Szabados of Springfield; two sons, Mike Wilkin of Springfield and Kevin (Adele) Wilkin of Pawnee; five grandchildren, Jessica Barrow, Katie Blessing, Drew, Lauren and Paige Szabados; three great grandchildren and one brother, Jerry (Charlene) Wilkin of Springfield.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Robert, Jack and Bill Wilkin.

James was a member of St. Frances Cabrini Church. He retired from Bell Telephone, AT&T, Bell Communication after 37 years of service. He was a United States Army Veteran serving during the Korean War. James installed the first 911 system in Sangamon County.

He loved fishing and woodworking and spending time with his grandchildren.

Visitation: 4-7 pm, Sunday, May 7, 2017 at Staab Funeral Home. A prayer service will be held at 4 pm.

Funeral Mass: 10:30 am, Monday, May 8, 2017 at St. Cabrini Church with Reverend Scott Thelander officiating. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Frances Cabrini Church or St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
The family would like to thank everyone at Mill Creek for the wonderful care that James received as a resident.
