SPRINGFIELD – James P. Upchurch, 71, of Springfield, Illinois, passed away on August 11, 2009, at 1:33 a.m. at St. John’s Hospital.
He was born Dec 29, 1937, in Creal Springs, IL, the son of John and Mildred Upchurch. He married Charlene Riley on Sept 9, 1961, in Vienna, IL.
Jim was a veteran of the U.S. Army from Nov. 1956 to Nov. 1959, serving the last year in Korea. He was a member of Springfield Southern Baptist Church, serving as a deacon and taught Sunday school for 34 years. Jim was employed by the Horace Mann Insurance Company from 1962 to 2000, serving as Assistant Vice President of Auto Underwriting, president of the Springfield Chapter of CPCU and teaching 14 IIA insurance classes.
He is survived by his wife Charlene; two sons, Steve Upchurch (wife, Kim) of Springfield and Darin Upchurch of Austin, TX; two grandsons, Ben and Austin of Springfield; three brothers, Joe (wife, Myrl), Jerry (wife, Brenda) of Marion IL, Kenny (wife, Marilyn) of Tunnel Hill, IL; and a deceased brother, Mick (wife Robbie) of Creal Springs, IL; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, August 13, 2009, at Staab Funeral Home. Lie in state from 10-10:30 a.m. Friday, August 14, 2009, at Springfield Southern Baptist Church with funeral service at 10:30 a.m. with Pastor Mike Keppler officiating.
Burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, August 15, 2009, at Vienna Cemetery in Vienna, Illinois.
