James “Jimbo” A. Ashton, 78, of Springfield, passed away on Wednesday, February 9, 2022 at his home surrounded by his family. He was born July 15, 1943, in Springfield, the son of Paul F. and Mary Louise (Tietz) Ashton. He married Patricia “Trish” Coffey on March 7, 1980 and she survives.
Also surviving are his son, Scott Ashton of Springfield; grandson, Zach (Lex Schubert) Ashton of Springfield; great-grandson, Rory Ashton; sister, Paulette (Gary) Dumonceaux of Rochester; brother, Frank (Karol) Ashton of Springfield; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He is preceded in death by his parents; son, Jason Ashton; and two brothers, Fred Ashton and Edward Ashton, Sr.
Jimbo was a resident of Springfield all his life. He graduated from Griffin High School. He was a hairdresser for 60 years and managed several local salons. He also worked at Horace Mann as a computer operator, retiring after 31 years of service.
Jimbo adored his family and was always helping others. He was a Coca-Cola collector and volunteered Illinois State Fair Museum during the fair. He belonged to Starlite Campers Club and Lake Jacksonville Club for 37 years. He enjoyed fishing, camping, especially sitting by the campfire, having a beer with his friends. Jimbo also enjoyed playing cards and was an avid Chicago Cubs and Bears fan.
Visitation: 4 – 7 pm, Tuesday, February 15, 2022 at Staab Funeral Home – Springfield. Casual attire preferred.
Funeral Service: 10:30 am, Wednesday, February 16, 2022 at Staab Funeral Home – Springfield, with Reverend Kevin Mann officiating. Burial will follow at Rochester Cemetery.
