James “Jim” R. Dougherty, 93, of Springfield, died at 10:39 a.m., Monday, October 7, 2013 at St. John’s Hospital. He was born May 20, 1920 in Springfield to James and Mary Leman Dougherty. He married Freda Loyd and she preceded him in death on February 7, 1996.
His parents and ten brothers and sisters also preceded him in death.
Survivors include several nieces and nephews.
Jim was an avid Cubs fan. He enjoyed fishing, spending time socializing with his friends at Ma-Fatzs Tavern and eating at Steak-n-shake. He had worked as a Union Roofer, retiring at age 62. He was a US Army Air Force veteran serving in WWII in several campaigns and received the American Defense Service Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Theatre Ribbon with Silver Battle Star and four Bronze Battle Stars, seven Overseas Service Bars, one Service Stripe, Good Conduct Medal and Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Battle Star.
Visitation: 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m., Wednesday, October 9, 2013 at Staab Funeral Home.
Graveside Service: 1 p.m., Wednesday, October 9, 2013 at Camp Butler National Cemetery where the Sangamon County Interveterans Burial Detail and US Army will conduct Military Honors.
Memorial contributions may be made to Northenders VFW or Sangamon County Interveterans Burial Detail.
