James H. Bernahl, 85, of Riverton, died at 11:09 am, Tuesday, August 28, 2012 at his home. He was born October 2, 1926 in Detroit, MI, to Theodore Augustus and Ruth Semple Bernahl. He married Roberta Lamkey on October 6, 1950 and she survives. Also surviving are one daughter, Cindy (Dave) Springer of Dawson, Illinois; two sons, J. Alan (Joni) Bernahl of Chatham and Keith (Marsa) Bernahl of Springfield; five grandchildren, Staci (Paul) Byers of Spaulding, Chad (Amanda) Bernahl of Apple Valley, MN, Brandon (Lauren) Springer of Ashland, MO, Audrey Bernahl of Chatham and Adam Loper of Minneapolis, MN; six great grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Marge Bernahl of Dawson and several nieces, nephews and cousins, including William Bernahl of Chicago.
James was a member of Riverton United Methodist Church; Operators Local 965B and International Operating Engineers. He worked for Springfield Sand & Gravel for 33 years and then worked at Pryco for 5 years. His favorite hobbies include working on his farm, building birdhouses, collecting arrowheads and visiting with his family, friends and neighbors.
Visitation: 11 am – 1 pm, Friday, August 31, 2012 at Riverton United Methodist Church.
Funeral Service: 1 pm, Friday, August 31, 2012 at Riverton United Methodist Church with Reverend Dr. Jonathan Dixon officiating. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery where the Sangamon County Interveterans Burial Detail will conduct military honors.
