SPRINGFIELD – James E. Miller, 83, of Springfield died at 4:20 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19, 2007, at St. John’s Hospital.
He was born Sept. 20, 1924, in Macoupin County, the son of Oakley and Alice Leadill Miller. He married Virginia A. Bates on May 5, 1946; she preceded him in death on March 19, 2006. He was also preceded in death by his parents and an infant son, James Leroy Miller.
Mr. Miller, a resident of Springfield most of his life, was a driver for Springfield Mass Transit for 17 years.
He was a member of Amalgamated Transit Union 1249 and was an U.S. Army veteran.
Surviving are a daughter, Jan (Ed) Savorgino of Springfield; son, William (Susan) Miller of Pleasant Plains; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; a sister, Mary Cantrall of Tucson, Ariz.; and two cousins, Dale and Danny White.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 25, 2007, at Staab Funeral Home. Services will be there at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 26, 2007, with Vaughn Beeman officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery in Palmyra where military honors will be conducted.
Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or American Diabetes Association.
