James Edward Eck, Sr., 75 of Springfield passed away at 12:30 pm on Wednesday, July 13, 2011, at his home. He was born January 14, 1936, in Springfield, Illinois to Wendell W. and Amelia A. Kempen Eck. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters Anna Marie Sandhaas and Mary K. Kern. He married Joan M. Summer in December of 1954 at Blessed Sacrament Church in Springfield and she survives.
Also surviving are two sons, James (Sharon) Eck, Jr. and Richard Eck; three daughters, Laura (Craig) Ewing, Lisa (George) Martin and Linda (Thomas) Jennings; one brother William J. (Carol) Eck all of Springfield; seven grandchildren, Brittany, Aaron, Sarah, Tommy, Angie, Jennifer and Abby; one great granddaughter, Aubry and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Jim graduated from Cathedral Boys High School in Springfield in 1953. He was employed by Mel-O-Cream Donuts and was a devoted employee for over 50 years, retiring in 2002.
He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Parish his entire life. His passion was gardening. He was an avid gardener throughout his life, always starting his own plants from seed. His pets were also a very important part of his life.
Visitation: 4-6pm, Tuesday, July 19, 2011 at Staab Funeral Home.
Funeral Service: 9 am, Wednesday, July 20, 2011 at Staab Funeral home with Reverend Jeff Grant officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
