SPRINGFIELD – Jack L. Smith Sr., 68, of Springfield, formerly of Dawson, died at his home at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 27, 2009.
He was born November 12, 1940, in Springfield, to George H. and Velma I. Sperry Smith II. He married Carol S. Kleppin on September 9, 1961; she survives.
Jack is also survived by one daughter, Cindy (husband, Kenneth) Lyons of Riverton; three sons, Jack (significant other, John Tompkins) Smith Jr., Jim (wife, Chris) Smith and Ron (significant other, Shelley Sweetin) Smith, all of Springfield; nine grandchildren, Luke (significant other, Brittany Miller) Lyons, Pat Lyons, Ben Lyons, Nicole Hogg, Todd Smith, Stephanie (significant other, Wayne Nolan) Smith, Jordan Taylor Smith, Justin Ziegler and Brandon Ziegler; four great-grandchildren, Lukeas, Courtney, Allissa and Cameron; three sisters, Barbara (partner, Jan Hurley) Henn of Auburn, Pat (husband, Rich) Smith of Springfield and Sharon Hupp of Auburn; one brother, George Bud Smith of Decatur; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Nora Kisner; and one brother, Tom Smith.
Jack was a member of Riverton United Methodist Church and attended Feitshans High School. He enjoyed playing bingo and watching NASCAR. Jack was previously employed by Leath Furniture, where he worked as a deliveryman and warehouseman.
Visitation will be held from 4-6:30 p.m. on Monday, June 29, 2009, at Staab Funeral Home. A funeral service will follow at 6:30 p.m. with the Pastor Jonathan Dixon officiating.
