SPRINGFIELD – Irene Joyner, 69, of Springfield died at 12:48 p.m. Sunday, June 8, 2008, at Memorial Medical Center.

She was born June 20, 1938, in St. Louis, the daughter of Freeman and Margaret Brown Outlaw. She married the Rev. Jack P. Joyner, formerly of Memphis, Tenn., in Peoria on June 20, 1991.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Joan Outlaw, brother, Charles Outlaw; and first husband, Charles Richard Robinson.

She is survived by her husband; daughter Cassandra (husband, Bruce) Pryor of Springfield; two sons, Mac Henry Robinson and Charles Robinson, both of Springfield; two grandchildren, Anita Robinson and Charles Robinson; two great-grandchildren; an aunt; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She retired from the state in 1997 from the Illinois Department of Public Aid, where she held various jobs including assistant director. She was a member of Bissell United Methodist Church, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, past member of United Way Board, past finance secretary at Grace United Methodist Church and past member of the finance committee for Central Illinois conference of United Methodist Churches. She graduated from the University of Illinois and obtained a master’s in social work from St. Louis University.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 11, 2008, at Staab Funeral Home. Lie in state from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday, June 12, 2008, at Bissell United Methodist Church, where funeral services will begin at 11 a.m. Burial will be at Roselawn Memorial Park.
