SPRINGFIELD – Howard E. Harrell Jr., age 88, a lifelong resident of Springfield, died peacefully surrounded by his family at Memorial Medical Center on Thursday, May 13, 2010.
He was born in Springfield, the son of Howard and Clara Harrell Sr. He married Edna Pickwick on November 14, 1944, in Dawson Creek, British Columbia, Canada; she died in 1983. He also was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Robert.
Surviving are his sister, Helen E. Smith, and a brother, William (wife, Margaret) Harrell, both of Springfield; and several nieces and nephews.
He retired from Sangamo Electric as chief industrial engineer and later from Horace Mann Insurance. He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the 35th Engineers. He was a member of West Side Christian Church, a lifelong member of Springfield Lodge No. 4 AF&AM and a charter member of Sangamo Surf Club.
Howard at one time was an avid golfer and enjoyed traveling to visit relatives in Aurora- Naperville and good friends in Champaign, Northbrook, and Peoria. He also enjoyed wintering in Florida.
A visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Monday, May 17, 2010, at Staab Funeral Home. A funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 18, 2010, at Staab Funeral Home, with Vaughn Beeman officiating. Burial will be at Camp Butler National Cemetery.
