Henry Harmon Williams

SPRINGFIELD – Henry H. Williams, U.S. Air Force M. Sgt (ret.), gave his final salute January 4, 2010. He was born the son of Harmon E. and Anna L. Young Williams on October 7, 1916 in Rural Cantrall, Illinois.

He served 24 years in the U.S. Army Air Corps and U.S. Air Force during World War II, Korean War and Vietnam era retiring on July 1, 1965. During his military service he was an aircraft engineer mechanic instructor at Chanute Air Force Base in Rantoul, IL a flight engineer based in Tachikawa, Japan, flying injured soldiers from the MASH units to hospitals in Japan for treatment. While based in the Azores, he held several different positions of duty. After military service, he was employed by Riteway Automotive in Rantoul, Illinois as a parts store manager. Later, he drove an 18-Wheeler for the family WK& W Trucking, Inc. for 6 years. He was a member of Springfield Southern Baptist Church and served as a volunteer Red Coat at Memorial Medical Center for 15 years. He was an eye donor for research of macular degeneration. He married Ellen M. Keen on September 1, 1942 in Springfield. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Edward. He is survived by his wife, Ellen of Springfield; daughter, Marilyn (Gerard) Metzger of Chicago; son, Joseph (Jeannine) Williams of Acworth, GA; brother, Arthur (Betty) Williams of Springfield; sister, Helen Sample of Colorado Springs, CO; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and a host of valued friends.

Visitation will be from 4-6 pm, Wednesday, January 6, 2010 at Staab Funeral Home. Funeral service will be at 10 am, Thursday, January 7, 2010 at Staab Funeral Home with Pastor Mike Keppler officiating. Burial will be at Camp Butler National Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Salvation Army or Kumler Neighborhood Ministries Food Pantry.
