SPRINGFIELD – Helen V. Van Meter, 86, of Springfield died at 11:25 p.m. Friday, Jan. 1, 2010, at Lewis Memorial Christian Village.
She was born June 5, 1923, in Chicago, the daughter of Arthur and Bertha F. Judd Johnson. She married Harold Van Meter on Sept. 6, 1945.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Arthur W. Johnson.
She is survived by her husband, Harold Van Meter; three daughters, Mrs. Larry (Pauline) Trummel of Livermore, Calif., Mrs. David (Tricia) Crouch of Springfield and Mrs. Alan (Mari) Peckham of Wood Dale; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Helen had been a resident of Springfield since 1937. She taught at Christian Elementary, Harry Hodde Cerebral Palsy School and retired in 1988 from Lanphier High School.
Helen was a member of West Side Christian Church and Beau Knots Sunday school class. She was a former member of Kings Daughters, and a member of the Teachers Retirement System, SEA, IEA, NEA, and the Illinois Retired Teachers Association.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 4, 2010, at Staab Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2010, at Staab Funeral Home, with Pastor Larry Trummel and Vaughn Beeman officiating.
Burial will be in Camp Butler National Cemetery.
