Helen L. "Rita" Van Diver

Helen L. “Rita” Van Diver, 85 of Springfield, died at 8:40 a.m. Wednesday, February 22, 2012 at Auburn Nursing Home. She was born on May 5, 1926 in Evansville, IN to Macdonald and Ailene Clayton Shockley. She married William G. “Bill” Van Diver on January 22, 1949 and he preceded her in death on May 29, 1989. Also preceding her in death were her parents; great grandson, Kyle Royer; brother, James Edwin Shockley and two sisters – Wanda Cain and Athleen Hinsey.
Surviving are a daughter, Helen M. “Shellie” Van Diver of San Diego; three sons, Dean Van Diver and Gerry (wife; Sherry Chapman) Van Diver, both of Springfield and Patrick (Crystal) Van Diver of Chatham; daughter-in-law, Mitzi Van Diver of Springfield; four grandchildren, Betsy (Bryan) Leefers, Shawn Van Diver, Trista (Ben) Royer and Jonathan Van Diver; six great grandchildren, Mia, Ryan, Alex, Kody, Jake and Jett and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Rita was a resident of Springfield since 1949. She was of the Catholic Faith. Formerly, she worked as a waitress at the Old Glade Room at the St. Nick Hotel, Saputos and Black Angus.
Visitation: 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. Saturday, February 25, 2012 at Staab Funeral Home
Funeral Service: 12:00 p.m. Saturday, February 25, 2012 at Staab Funeral Home with Monsignor John Ossola officiating.
Burial will be at Camp Butler National Cemetery at 10 a.m. on Monday, February 27, 2012.
Memorial Contributions may be made to the Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago or the Ronald McDonald House.
