SPRINGFIELD – Helen J. Gietl, 77, of Springfield died at 7:55 a.m. Friday, April 17, 2009, at St. John’s Hospice.
She was born Feb. 5, 1932, in Macomb, the daughter of Raymond and Ester VanOrmer Burke. She married Fred A. Gietl on Feb. 23, 1952; he preceded her in death on April 19, 2006.
She also was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, Tim and Dave Gietl; a brother, John Burke; and two sisters, Agnes Slagle and Rose Marie Burke.
She is survived by a daughter, Cynthia (Jerry) Ferguson of Springfield; two sons, Matthew (companion, Kim Pate) Gietl of Springfield and Daniel (Jodi) Gietl of Zionsville, Ind.; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Weeks of Monticello and Patricia Moran of Champaign; two brothers, Patrick (June) Burke of Bloomington and Dick Burke of Macomb; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Helen retired from St. John’s Hospital as an administrative assistant after 25 years of service.
She was a member of St. Cabrini Church, taught catechism classes in Canoga Park, Calif., and Chatham, and read to second-graders at St. Cabrini Church.
Visitation will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday, April 19, 2009, at Staab Funeral Home. A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, April 20, 2009, at St. Cabrini Church, with the Rev. Joseph Molloy officiating. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to St. John’s Hospice or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
